What is Cellulite

Cellulite is enlarged pockets of fat that are pushed towards the skin’s surface by tight, inflexible connective tissue.

It’s a problem that plagues most women and a smaller number of men.

Cellulite is characterised by the dimples that appear on the surface of the skin, along with raised areas.

These dimples most commonly appear on the thighs and buttocks, although some patients also present with cellulite on their arms and abdominal region.

Cellulite (also known as orange peel syndrome and cottage cheese skin) is the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissues that manifests topographically as skin dimpling and nodularity, often on the pelvic region, lower limbs and abdomen.

These fibrous tissue strands extend through the dermal and hypodermal fat layers and connect to the underlying muscle layer.

Cellulite

Cellulite is a problem that the vast majority of women suffer from and unfortunately, it is notoriously hard to shift the dreaded orange peel dimples. Cellulite is found in patients of all weights, although it may be more noticeable on overweight patients.

Cellulite occurs in most post pubertal females with over 80% of women over the age of twenty say that they suffer from the unsightly dimpling.

Cellulite is caused by changes which take place far below the skin’s surface, these changes include the expansion of the fat cells in the hypodermal fat layer, which becomes thickened as a result, and the fact that the fibrous bands which connect the muscle and the skin become hardened and lose their flexibility when they contract.

This will result in the connective a band pulling the skin down, causing cellulite’s dimpled effect and trapping pockets of fat, causing the trapped fat to bulge towards the skin’s surface.

Unfortunately as these changes are happening below the skin’s surface and causing cellulite to appear, the skin is losing is elasticity because collagen production has slowed down and the skin becomes thinner, making cellulite appear even worse.

There are three biological factors contribute to the development of cellulite; these are a thickened hypodermal fat layer, the depletion of collagen as we age and the hardening of the fibrous connective tissue septae. Cellulite is not a skin condition which can be resolved by using creams to tone and tighten the skin.
