Lips are an important part of a person’s facial beauty. Many women want fuller thicker lips, which can often improve self-confidence. This can be achieved using hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers which are made from materials naturally found in the body.

The procedure can create fuller lips, enhance lips, can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines around the lips and even out asymmetrical lips.

History of Lip Enhancement

Records of lip enhancement have been found as far back as the 20th century. A certain technique was used to modify the lip with numerous small piercings to give the appearance of a larger lip.

Since the Stone Age women from various tribal backgrounds have developed ways to achieve the appearance of fuller lips. Tribal ceremonies involving the insertion of assorted materials into both the upper and lower lip to alter their shape and/or increase the size have been practiced in African tribes for hundreds of years.

Type of dermal filler used for lip enhancement

Hyaluronic acid is the most popular substance used for dermal fillers. It is a natural substance found in the body in the fluid surrounding your eyes and in the connective tissues.

There are several different types of hyaluronic acid based fillers for the lips, however, the most popular are Dermal Fillers Lip Volume, Teosyal Kiss, and Stylage Special Lips.

Parts of the lip that can be enhanced

  • The border or outline to create definition
  • The cupids bow
  • The lines going down the side of the mouth to create a happy look
  • The lines above the upper lip (often due to smoking) can be reduced
  • The fleshy part of the lip – to give more volume and fuller lips

The procedure

The procedure is relatively quick and straightforward. The area is thoroughly cleaned. A topical anesthetic is then applied to numb the area and is left on for approximately 15 minutes. The dermal filler is injected at precise points and the surgeon then massages the area to even out the product. The patient is fully awake throughout the procedure. Results can be seen straight away.

The results

After the injection, the lips may be a little swollen so the result the patient sees straight away may not be the final result as the swelling will have to settle down. For the best results, a touch-up treatment two weeks after the initial treatment is advised. The results usually last from six to twelve months depending on the product used and each individual.
