The appearance of the hands, as well as the face and neck, are the most noticeable parts of the body. However, while there have been great advances in facial cosmetic procedures, rejuvenation of the hand has been largely ignored.

Hand rejuvenation is now being requested by cosmetic patients as their ageing hands now contradict their rejuvenated face.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi is able to utilise a number of rejuvenation techniques to improve the ageing changes of the back of the hand. A careful clinical examination and the use of a correct treatment and technique, ensure the safety and success of the treatment. The back of the hand is a complex region consisting of muscles, tendons and blood vessels.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi stresses that the importance of a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of this area is essential as well as expert knowledge on the products that are to be used.

Ageing hands

Youthful hands are smooth, hydrated and firm. There are no visible veins or tendons. As the hands age the spaces between the bones at the back of the hand get larger, the skin dries up and pigmented spots start to appear. There has been increased demand for hand rejuvenation over the last 10 years.

There are some different options and techniques used to treat the texture of the hands; these include chemicals peels, intense pulsed light and lasers. Injectable solutions can increase lost volume; some of these are hyaluronic acid, poly-l-lactic acid and autologous fat.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi says that injectable substances must have longevity and durability for it to worthwhile using them. Different procedures for hand rejuvenation Dermal fillers Dermal fillers have been shown to be one of the best options for volume replacement in the hand.

They improve the elasticity of the skin; diminish the view of pronounced structures and the appearance of wrinkles in the ageing hand. Dermal Fillers have long been used to restore volume to the face.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid stimulates the production of cells which increase skin thickness and elasticity. It is a natural substance that is already found in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid injections usually last from 6-12 months. They increase softness and smoothness of the skin and reduce wrinkles. There are minimal adverse effects with hyaluronic acid injections as the substance already exists in the body.

At London Medical and Aesthetic Clinic, Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi offers a range of different hyaluronic acid injections.

Sculptra

Pol-L-Lactic Acid is a synthetic material used to restore volume by inducing the production of collagen. It has been used for many years in the cosmetic industry.

Sculptra, helps restore plumpness and collagen production to the upper-side of sunken hands. Sculptra does not harm the body and is able to be broken down naturally. For hand rejuvenation, multiple treatments are needed.

Adverse effects of this treatment are bruising, oedema and the development of lumps. These lumps can be prevented by massaging the area during treatment and regularly for approximately one month after.

This treatment has been shown to last from 18 to 24 months.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfers have been successfully used to replace lost volume in hands. The two steps to this method are fat harvesting and fat injections. The fat is harvested usually from the abdomen or the upper thighs.

This is an invasive procedure with a probable risk of bruising, infection and scarring. Fresh fat tissue or fat that has been harvested previously the frozen and thawed can be used. The fat is then injected into the back of the hand.

The length span of the treatment is uncertain and multiple treatments are usually needed. Some side effects of lumps or uneven skin surface have been reported in patients; however, the main side-effect is oedema.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels work by removing a layer of damaged skin by exfoliation and peeling to reveal a new healthy layer of skin. The treatment involves the application of a chemical solution onto the skin. After the treatment, the skin can be sensitive to the sun.

Chemical peels have been proven to reduce wrinkles, dark pigmentation and regenerate the skin.

Intense Pulsed Light Intense

At London Medical and Aesthetic Clinic, we offer a variety of different options including Intense Pulsed Light Intense.

Pulsed Light involves targeting the lower layers of skin with intense light pulses. This treatment is less invasive than chemical peels and there is minimal recovery time; however, the results are not as striking as the chemical peels. There are some minor side effects, the skin might turn a pink colour and be quite tender straight after the treatment, some pain might also occur during the treatment.

Laser Treatment

Lasers work by targeting the skin with high energy focused beams of intense light and heat. Laser treatment is more precisely delivered than other treatments such as chemical peels.

It is proven to be one of the most effective treatments in dealing with skin conditions such as wrinkles spots and scars. Sculptra combined with CO2 laser When used in combination with a revolutionary laser treatment such as the Performa CO2, for laser skin resurfacing, Sculptra can enhance results even further.

Cynosure’s Performa CO2 is a carbon dioxide laser designed to penetrate the skin’s tissue without damaging the surrounding area, delivering a less aggressive procedure that’s kinder on skin. The machine introduces a new air-cooling system using cold air to cool down the skin, and deliver radical results in just one treatment.

The Performa CO2 is an effective anti-aging procedure for treating uneven skin tone, texture, pigmentation and discoloration of the skin, particularly on the hands.
