FAQ – Derma Rollers

Read more about dermaroller treatment

When the skin is rolled, with a Dermaroller, tiny needles create tiny channels deep in to the dermis of the skin. These deep channels cause keratinocytes and fibroblasts to produce numerous growth factors that induce collagen synthesis. The stimulation of growth factors is based on how the body naturally rebuilds skin density and integrity.

This is what is called the wound healing process. When rollers are used in conjunction with specially formulated creams, specific cells can be targeted for maximum therapeutic effect such as anti-ageing or reduction of pigmentation .Dermal rolling is very safe when conducted correctly and heals quickly.

Dermaroller is a treatment for both acne scarring and rejuvenation. It’s completely safe and increasingly popular skin renewal technique to restore the healthy youthful appearance of the skin.

Patients can expect visible signs of acne scarring improvement after just 6 weeks following the treatment and continue to improve for up to a year or more. We recommends a minimum course of 3- 6 Dermaroller treatments, at 6 week intervals to achieve optimum results.

Where can Dermaroller be used?

The Dermal Roller can be used to treat deep wrinkles, fine wrinkles, skin creases and lines such as crow’s feet, smile lines, scowl lines and areas around the mouth, jaw, neck, chest and hands. It stimulates collagen production which thickens the skin. The Dermaroller improves the appearance of large pores, thickens the dermis and enhances dermal compactness, Improves skin texture, relaxes old scars,  smoothes away wrinkles, lines, folds and crows feet. Reduces the appearance of atrophic and hypertrophic scars and scars caused by acne.

How does the Dermaroller work?

The process involves rolling a small barrel covered in very fine and small needles (1.5mm) quickly over the area to be treated in six directions. The needles puncture the skin and part the pores of the top layer of skin without damaging it. The process however is read as damage by the body and growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin are triggered. The skin renews itself every 40 days and therefore with 4-6 weekly Dermaroller treatments you see noticeable changes which grow with every treatment.

Dermaroller Therapy is a natural skin rejuvenation treatment that utilises advanced skin-needling. Skin needling stimulates the skin and prompts regeneration and repair. This process has been shown to stimulate collagen production from within and is therefore a naturally occurring process. The result of this regeneration is the creation of smoother, brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin.

After treatment, your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual and you will look as though you have minor sunburn. This will subside after 1 to 2 hours and only slight redness will still be visible the following day.

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 1 to 2 days in average, depending on the pigments of the individual.

So after the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way as moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch. However this will diminish greatly after a few hours following the treatment and within the next 48 hours the skin will be completely healed, and there will be barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.

It is important to properly care for your skin following a treatment to optimise results. It is recommended you should follow this routine up to 3 months after the last treatment.
Starter packs are available and are recommended following treatment.

Who can benefit from Dermaroller treatment?

Dermaroller is safe for all skin types and colours. Dermaroller is particularly good for acne scarring which is otherwise difficult to treat and is used in NHS acne clinics for that very need. Alongside this, atrophic (sunken) scars also respond very well.

All skin types on a Fitzpatrick scale can have the treatment with no risk of discolouration or post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.

Skin Needling vs Ablative treatments

  • No skin damage – The outer, protective layers of the skin are kept intact, unlike resurfacing techniques that remove this layer.
  • Less pain – Skin needling only pin pricks the skin without causing damage to the nerve cells. This means skin is less susceptible to pain and irritation.
  • Less downtime – The epidermis remains intact so maximum downtime required would be 1 or2 days.
  • Minimal side effects
  • Suitable for all skin types & body parts – This includes under eye (infra/supra orbital), preoral area, neck, dcolletage, hands, abdomen, inner arms and any other parts of the body requiring treatment
  • No skin sensitivity to UV light – The skins sun protection barrier would not be affected or damaged by the treatment.
  • No permanent skin discolouration risks – The epidermis protects from UV induced hyperpigmentation, so less risk of past-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Can be repeated without any limits the more, the better!
  • Cost-effective treatment alternative

Possible side effects of Dermaroller

There are virtually no negative side effects, and none have ever been reported in over 150,000 procedures performed worldwide.

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 12 to 24 hours on average. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend healing minerals, peptides or hyaluronic acid after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sun screen. We also recommend the use of mineral makeup to help with the healing.

After the Dermaroller it is advised to use an Anti-Inflammatory Cleanser to soothe, Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate, Copper to help heal, Zinc to help heal but also to protect. An SPF for 3 days after the treatment is essential.
