The chipmunk chaps: These male stars all look bizarrely fuller faced. Are their new looks down to cosmetic fillers? Or just middle-aged spread?

By ALISON BOSHOFF FOR THE DAILY MAIL PUBLISHED: 19 February 2016

The usually ageless Tom Cruise looked positively odd at the Baftas last weekend. With cheeks as chubby as a teenage Swiss milkmaid and sunken eyes, the effect was incredibly spooky. And he’s not the only one — showbusiness (and even politics) is full of men under pressure to look good, who appear to have resorted to face-plumping filler injections or fat transfers to try to bring back a bit of youthful zing. Not all are entirely successful, of course. But who has done what, and why? And who is just plumping out naturally?

ALISON BOSHOFF asked three surgeons for their opinions…

VLADIMIR PUTIN, 63: The Russian President is no stranger to vanity. Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi of the London Medical and Aesthetic Clinic in Harley Street says: ‘Putin looks classically grumpy in his old photo. The obvious Botox and bad dermal fillers injections in his cheeks made him look less grumpy — but not prettier.’

‘He would appear to have had fillers, Botox, some laser resurfacing to improve his skin tone and excess skin removed from his lower eyes.’

Still singing and still looking remarkably similar — so has Donny Osmond had a little help?

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi of the London Medical and Aesthetic Clinic, Harley Street, says he almost certainly has. ‘I think Donny has had dermal fillers on the cheeks. He looks very good and has natural and subtle results of Botox on the forehead.’

The Mission: Impossible star apparently started dyeing his hair a couple of years ago So has he had face fillers, too? Dr Papageorg, a Harley Street facial plastic surgeon, thinks it’s probable

TOM CRUISE, 53: The Mission: Impossible star apparently started dyeing his hair a couple of years ago. So has he had face fillers, too? Dr Papageorg, a facial plastic surgeon, thinks it’s probable. ‘I believe that Tom Cruise’s new look is more accidental because the changes are very dramatic and I don’t think someone like him would embrace that. He has excessive volume in the middle of his face, probably as a result of fillers. For four to six weeks afterwards they can leave noticeable swelling and water retention.’

Mickey Rourke was a gorgeous leading man two decades ago But his widely reported plastic surgery has taken a heavy toll. It’s believed he’s had filling fat transfers in his lips and cheeks which have led to disastrous bumps in his lower and mid face

MICKEY ROURKE, 63: He was a gorgeous leading man two decades ago, but his widely reported plastic surgery has taken a heavy toll. It’s believed he’s had filling fat transfers in his lips and cheeks which have led to disastrous bumps in his lower and mid face. ‘The tell-tale of a facelift is his ear lobe which you can see is blended to his face — we call this the pixie ear,’ says Mark Norfok. ‘He’s probably used fillers in his lips and cheeks and Botox in his forehead.’

Sylvester Stallone pictured looking natural in 1987 Doctor says: ‘He looks full in the cheeks, suggesting he’s had some filler. He also appears to have had an eyelift — and maybe a facelift, too.’

SYLVESTER STALLONE, 69: Action hero Sly is having a renaissance — nominated for a Best Supporting Actor gong at the Oscars this year for the Rocky sequel Creed, nearly 40 years after his previous nominations for the original Rocky film. ‘He looks full in the cheeks, suggesting he’s had some filler. He also appears to have had an eyelift — and maybe a facelift, too.’

Simon Cowell looking fresh-faced in 2002 The X Factor boss is famously a fan of Botox and has complained: ‘Maintenance is a bitch’ when it comes to keeping himself camera-ready. ‘Simon is very open about the work he has had done, ‘Regular Botox and fillers — and possibly some skin resurfacing work — are all part and parcel of his looking-good regimen.’

Botox and fillers — and possibly some skin resurfacing work — are all part and parcel of his looking-good regimen.’

Actor Don Johnson has also changed a great deal since his Miami Vice heyday It’s been reported over the years that he’s had a nose job, facelift and Botox . . . but what do the surgeons think? There are no obvious signs of Don having had any cosmetic work done. He would appear to be ageing naturally and appropriately for a man of his years.

DON JOHNSON, 66: His ex, Melanie Griffith, is famous for having had repeated procedures, and actor Don Johnson has also changed a great deal since his Miami Vice heyday. It’s been reported over the years that he’s had a nose job, facelift and Botox . . . but what do the surgeons think? There are no obvious signs of Don having had any cosmetic work done. Billy Crystal in 1977 With receding hairline and substantial cheeks, maybe comic actor Billy Crystal — nine times the host of the Oscars — doesn’t have much to laugh about these days. But has he had fillers to freshen up his face? ‘His skin tone is more even than it used to be, suggesting he may have had some skin resurfacing work done to even out any areas of age-related pigmentation on his face. The chubby cheeks may be down to fillers or simply weight gain.’

Hello? Is it a younger Lionel Ritchie you’re looking for? ‘I would suggest Lionel has probably had a little help on the lines either side of the nose and Botox in his forehead.’ However, Dr Papageorg believes that he hasn’t had any procedures. He said: ‘He does look different and fuller in the face, but I believe that this is just the way he’s aged.’

Barry Manilow seems to have had the lot.looking back. ‘It’s a bad example of cosmetic work,’ says Dr Papageor. ‘He’s had fillers or fat transfer in his cheeks and you can see lumps and swelling so something’s gone wrong there.’ ‘He may have had some facelifts, plus a rhinoplasty. It also looks like Barry’s had a brow lift and surgery to improve on his eyebags.’
