Profhilo London Clinic

Profhilo is an exclusive bioremodelling injectable treatment that works to positively alters the skin with visible results after only 2 treatments which are usually 4-6 weeks apart. It is composed of a highly pure grade Hyaluronic Acid produced by biofermentation. The composition of Profhilo is unique with 64mg of Hyaluronic Acid within the 2ml syringe.

As we age, the collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in our skin starts to break down, which in turn means that the skin will start to sag.

Whilst Profhilo is a true breakthrough in anti-ageing treatments, it isn’t just beneficial to ageing skin – it offers many advantages to patients of all ages. Profhilo is an effective curative and preventative anti-ageing treatment that enhances skin health and vitality.

This treatment involves the use of hyaluronic acid which treats laxity. It also works by stimulating your own production of collagen and elastin within your skin which, over time, aims to gives the patient a tighter and more youthful appearance rejuvenating the skin from the deep layers up to the surface of the skin. The texture and skin tone will greatly improve even after one session.

Although Profhilo contains hyaluronic acid – a substance that occurs naturally in the body, it is not dermal filler and does not plump or add any volume to the areas treated. Profhilo instead is a unique treatment that is sometimes said to compete with dermal fillers with its five-entry point injection technique.

Profhilo is a new discovery within facial rejuvenation treatments. It’s 100% HA (Hyaluronic Acid) solution spreads within the skin to remodel the skins structure, nourish the dermal cells and treats skin laxity restoring the firmness of your skin.

Suitability

The doctor will invite the patient in for a consultation so that he/she can assess the skin and can then determine if this is the right treatment for the patient.

Profhilo is suitable for anyone who is over 18 years of age who are experiencing issues with skin laxity. This treatment has no upper age limit. In fact, in older patients, we have often seen more dramatic results.  It is not suitable for anyone who pregnant, breast feeding or those who have a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid.

Profhilo is also an excellent choice for the patient if they don’t want to add volume to specific areas, as it instead provides volume and hydration across the skin, giving an overall refreshed appearance. If the patient is looking for very subtle results, this treatment delivers. However, if the patient is looking for a lifting of the face, neck or any other area, then a combination approach with fillers, threads or surgery could be recommended.

Patients with bleeding disorders or a compromised immune system due to, for example, infectious diseases, cancer, HIV or diabetes should consult their doctor before considering this treatment.

Profhilo Treatment

Profhilo is injected using a unique specialised technique called BAP (BIO AESTHETIC POINTS). The BAP technique is 5 entry points of injection for each side of the face. This technique is proven to be anatomically safe avoiding the large vessels and nerves within the face and will give you maximised results with the minimum number of injections required.

BAP Technique:

  • The BAP is specifically chosen in automatically respective areas
  • The dilution phenomenon of the product itself
  • 5 injection per side
  • Reduced pain (slow injection)
  • Lower possibility of bruising or hematoma
  • Reduced number of treatment sessions
  • Greater pain compliance

This treatment usually takes 30 minutes depending on the size of the area.

Profhilo is a 2-stage process:

The first treatment involves a total of 10 subcutaneous injections (5 on each side of the face) using the Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP) injection technique (developed by IBSA Italia).

The treatment is repeated after 4 weeks. Although it is likely the patient will see positive effects after the first treatment (3-4 weeks post injection), it is the second treatment that is required to complete the Profhilo procedure and see the final results, which are seen 4 weeks after the second treatment.  The overall effect lasts approximately 6 months, after which the full procedure can be repeated.

A lot of patients tend to ask “Whats the difference between Profhilo and Dermal Fillers?” The answer is Profhilo enhances stem cell reproduction. It restores both skin and fat layers to their natural state and stimulates the body to produce four collagen types. The molecule chains of both high and low molecular weight non-animal hyaluronic acid are thermally stabilised and fused together creating a unique patented hybrid complex, to form a gel which spreads and becomes integrated into the skin. Whilst Dermal Fillers are the preferred option for replacing specific areas of loss volume and fat in the facial structure, they have long been used to plump areas of lost volume in the face and restore a youthful complexion. However, some of us aren’t ready to take that step and perhaps need an ‘overall overhaul’ for the skin. Profhilo can reshape the facial frame naturally.

Profhilo Results

Profhilo provides deep-down, long-lasting hydration and smoother, tighter skin. It is recommend having a top up treatment after 6-12 months to maintain results.

The patient should notice an improved skin tone, texture, elasticity and firmness with increased hydration and radiance. The result is healthier, softer and smoother skin.

 Aftercare

Aftercare for Profhilo is similar to that of other injectable treatments. The patient can use a cold pack to reduce any redness or swelling and keep hydrated to ensure you get the best results from treatment.

However, it is important for the patient to also know the following:

  • Avoid applying make-up to the treated area for 24 hours
  • Avoid physical activity for 24 hours
  • Avoid other cosmetic, beauty or dental treatments for at least a week
  • Use a high SPF sun-protection after treatment
  • Avoid extremes of hot or cold
  • Massage is not required, the product with diffuse naturally without any intervention
  • Contact the clinic as soon as possible if you have any concerns

Downtime

Profhilo’s low inflammatory profile, coupled with its clinically proven pro-healing properties means it is very safe and requires minimal downtime.

It is a very similar downtime to receiving anti-ageing injections, for example there may be some residual redness and swelling at the injection sites, however, this tends to settle very quickly with the vast majority of clients, and it is possible it will be noticeable by the time you leave the clinic. However, some clients who are prone to bleeding and bruising or who have sensitive skin may have some noticeable redness and perhaps a little bruising which appears a day or so later. Sometimes, a small lump is visible or palpated at the injection site where the product has been placed, however, this usually dissipates over 24 hours as it is absorbed into the skin.

Possible Rare Side Effects

Profhilo does not contain any synthetic chemicals which some people might react to, therefore there is less risks with this treatment.

As with any injectable treatment there are minor risks, including bruising and swelling, as well as infection, allergic reaction, vascular compromise and nerve damage; although these are rare. From a safety perspective, Profhilo is highly biocompatible, owing to the fact that it is made from natural hyaluronic acid and stabilised without the addition of chemical cross-linking agents, but it’s still important as an aesthetic injector to have the protocols to deal with any complications in case they occur.

The science behind Profhilo

NAHYCO™ Hybrid Technology combines innovation and complete safety with the production of stabilised hybrid hyaluronic acid cooperative complexes formed through a patented thermal process.

Owing to this new technology it was possible to combine 32mg of low molecular weight HA (L-HA: 80 – 100 KDa) and 32mg of high molecular weight HA (H-HA: 1100 – 1400 KDa) while maintaining complete manageability.

A total concentration of 64mg is produced which has never been achieved before precisely because of technological limitations. This process does not involve the use of chemical cross-linking agents, such as BDDE (1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether), and the final product, PROFHILO, is pure hyaluronic acid.

The HA is stabilised by a patented thermal process whereby the natural bonds found in high molecular weight (H-HA) break, and new hydrogen bonds are formed between the H-HA and low molecular weight (L-HA). This allows the 32mg of L-HA (80 – 100 kDa) to be combined with 32mg of H-HA (1100 – 1400 kDa), to form stable hybrid complexes (64mg in 2ml). In practice, the L-HA aims to hydrate and stimulate skin, while the H-HA acts as a dermal scaffold in the skin.

A study published in BMC Cell Biology in 2015 researched the effects of H-HA and L-HA chains of diverse length and a H-HA/L-HA hybrid (0.1 and 1% weight/volume), against a control on skin regeneration. Time lapse video microscopy in vitro studies indicated that the diverse length HA was capable of restoring the monolayer integrity of HaCat (aneuploid immortal keratinocyte cell line form adult human skin).

The hybrid had a faster regeneration rate than the diverse lengths, and, in co-culture scratch tests, wound closure was achieved in half the time of H-HA stimulated cells and 2.5-fold faster than the control. Additionally, type I collagen expression and production were evaluated. Compared to H-HA, L-HA and the control, persistence of a significantly higher expression level at 24 hours for the H-HA/L-HA hybrid was found. The research indicated that, both at high and low concentrations, hybrid complexes performed better than HA alone, thus suggesting their potential as medical devices in aesthetic and regenerative medicine.

Profhilo has also been awarded “Winner of Product Innovation of the Year, 2016 – The aesthetics Awards” and “Winner of the Best Injectable Product in Europe, 2017 – The Aesthetic Awards”.

Conclusion

Profhilo does not create the volumetric lift or volume replacement associated with cross-linked dermal fillers, however, it creates volume in the tissue where it is needed due to its high spreadability. Owing to this characteristic, it is an ideal treatment for challenging areas as well, such as the neck, perioral area, and hands and arms, where we do not see the significant volume loss, but skin has lost elasticity.

Here is the top 10 things patients’ needs to know about Profhilo:

1 || Profhilo is a skin remodelling treatment. Designed for individuals with aging skin that is lacking volume and elasticity. It’s a non-invasive, swift and non-permanent filler that targets skincare rather than beauty or cosmetology adjustments.

2 ||  Profhilo is a stabilized form of the miracle hydrating molecule hyaluronic acid. When injected, the slow release of Hyaluronic Acid stimulates the skin’s natural synthesis of collagen for plumped and firmed up skin.

3 || Profhilo is strategically placed at five key points on the face, starting with each side just next to the ears, then on to the nasolabial fold (laughter lines around the mouth), chin, under the eyes and on the tops of cheeks.

4 || It is especially effective at treating those areas prone to laxity and sagging like the cheeks, neck, chest and dĂŠcolletage. It hurts, not a lot, but it creates an unpleasant stinging sensation which lasts around 20 seconds. No downtime required.

5 || Profhilo takes a few days before you start to notice any visible improvement, mainly because unlike dermal fillers, the body has to produce the skin-boosting ingredients itself, which understandably takes a while.

6 || The radiance boost is one you will have never experienced before from any number of creams, scrubs or serums and it keeps on getting better as the skin produces more and more collagen.

7 || A top-up appointment after one month is recommended. If the patient repeats the process twice a year you will reap an enduring glow. The results from Profhilo treatments will most often last for up to six months, but results can differ from person to person.

8 || Due to the way Profhilo has been made, it acts as a hydrator rather than a filler, and is therefore fantastic for those with tired, dull and aging skin as it provides overall more plump and luminous skin with improved texture.

9 || Profhilo is advised for patients over the age of 18, who wish to target loss of laxity or aging skin. An excellent choice for if you don’t want to add volume to specific areas, as it instead provides volume and hydration across the skin, giving an overall rejuvenated appearance. If you’re over 60 your treatment does need to be managed carefully. For example, if there are deep folds present or the skin has lost elasticity, then combination treatments that include Profhilo may be more suitable. This is why consultation prior to treatment is so important!

10 || If the patient is looking for very subtle results, this treatment delivers. However, if you’re looking for a lifting of the face, neck or any other area, then a combination approach with fillers, threads or surgery could be recommended.

What can the patient do to ensure they get the best results from my injectable treatments?

Here are a few tips to optimise the outcome of the treatment:

  • Avoid having any alcohol the day before your treatment. This will help to minimize the chance of bruising.
  • In the week before the treatment, try to avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen or any other type of anti-inflammatory medication as this will also increase your risk of a bruise occurring.
  • After your treatment, please closely follow the aftercare advice given to you by your Medical Injector, and please do not apply anything else to the treatment area, unless previously discussed.
