Dr AyhamAl-Ayoubi examines the role of hyaluronic acid in skin boosters and mesotherapy treatments for skin rejuvenation.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are fast becoming one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments. This naturally occurring substance has been widely recognised for its anti-ageing properties and natural looking results.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi: Hyaluronic acid plays a vital role in maintenance of skin tissue as it is involved in retaining moisture, tissue repair and cellular growth. Known as a water-loving molecule, hyaluronic acid is capable of binding up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi: As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid our bodies produces decreases. Due to this reduction in hyaluronic acid, our skin is unable to retain moisture and begins to appear dry and wrinkled. The skin also looks loose and hollow due to the loss of volume.

By replenishing this depleted hyaluronic acid, the skin is better able to maintain moisture, creating the appearance of smoother, more youthful looking skin.

A study published in the American Journal of Aesthetic Surgery revealed that the thinning of the dermas occurs seven to eight years before sagging is actually visible. This means that the structural changes in the skin appear years before the effects are visible to the naked eye.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi argues that hyaluronic acid is an important treatment to halt the thinning of the dermis in turn reducing the visible results of gravity.

Traditionally skin boosting or mesotherapy refers to the practice of injecting scientifically designed medicine into the mesoderm or middle layer of the skin designed to stimulate skin rejuvenation hydration, collagen stimulation, fat breakdown, cellulite reduction and hair regrowth.

Hyaluronic Acid Skin boosting is a new and modern concept that gives us the tools to improve the skin’s texture, elasticity, hydration and surface tone. Skin boosters can be synergistically combined with other aesthetic treatments to maximise the anti-ageing and collagen stimulating effect.

Cross linked hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers stimulates de novo collagen production. This means that there is more to the treatment than simple hydration.

The Hyaluronic acid attach to receptor fibroblasts and stimulate the production of new collagen leading to a natural increase in dermal density. After four weeks patients notice a natural 8% increase in dermal density with a 14% increase at week nine.

By using a slightly stabilized form of hyaluronic acid and therefore slowing the speed at which it degrades in the body, water can be retained over a longer period of time. This increased ability to bind and hold water increases elasticity and fullness of the skin resulting in longevity of the effect.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi has stated that best results will be seen with a minimum of three treatments placed two to four weeks apart.

They can be used generally over the lower face, in the upper and lower lip to address smoker’s lines, to the décolletage area, to the dorsum of the hands and more recently they have been used in other areas such as the abdomen and the upper arms.

Dr Ayham Al- Ayoubi “The key to a successful treatment is good patient selection, good information on what can be achieved, regular maintenance and most importantly choosing the right product”.

Following a course of treatment patients have reported that their skin is smoother with improved elasticity and hydration of the skin, helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and reduce skin surface roughness.

As the hyaluronic acid is broken down over a number of months, maintenance top ups every six months or so may be indicated.

The number of treatments will vary according to individual needs. There are no restrictions on how often you can receive treatment. In fact, you can repeat treatment with Dermal Fillers Vital as often as you feel is necessary, so that you always look and feel your best.

Hyaluronic acid Mesotherapy can also be used in combination with Collagen Stimulation to achieve maximum volume and rejuvenation of the skin.
