Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi at the London Medical Aesthetic Clinic welcomes the new Professional Standards for Cosmetic Surgery being implemented by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The guidelines will protect the safety of patients, which Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi says is a fundamental part of a medical professional’s job.

The new guidelines will clamp down on enticing offers, deals, or promotions being offered by medical professionals and clinics.

non-surgical procedures

Medical practitioners who fail to adhere to the new guidelines may be struck off the register. Honest and realistic advice needs to be given to patients looking to receive cosmetic treatments as sometimes these patients can be quite vulnerable.

There are many doctors in the cosmetic industry who are practicing to a very high standard; however, there are also many who are engaging in poor practice.

The Royal College of Surgeons is also setting up a certification scheme to allow for patients to search for surgeons who have the correct qualifications and provisions to provide the desired treatment.

This new document recommends that:

• Certified surgeons are the only ones who should be performing these cosmetic treatments.

• Two weeks of a thinking period should be given to patients before they give consent for an operation.

• Written consent from a patient must be obtained and all aspects of the procedure must be explained, including side effects advantages and disadvantages allowing the patient to make an informed decision.

• Surgeons most hold the correct insurance to cover the procedures they are performing.

• Financial influences such as offers and discounts should not be used by surgeons.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi says: This new regulation is crucial to help protect the safety of patients. The growing popularity of cosmetic procedures means that there is a need for new stricter regulations.

It is extremely important that patients are no longer rushed into having surgeries. Patients need to be able to access the right information with ease to help them make an informed decision on what treatment to have and which practitioner to use.

This new framework is a necessary step to ensure that professional standards are kept to the highest level right throughout the board.
