Is snail slime the next big thing in skincare?

The rejuvenating properties of “snail slime” have been debated in the media over recent months with a host of creams and lotions claiming to contain high percentages of this magic ingredient with the most recent development being a clinic in Korea offering their clients the opportunity to have live snails crawl over their face as part of a new facial treatment.

With all of this media attention it stands to reason that your patients will be asking you about the “next best thing in skincare” so we feel it is important to differentiate between:

The Gimmicks:

The Science:

The Obagi Skin Care Rejuvenation System is the number one prescribed treatment in the UK for erasing uneven colour and reducing wrinkles.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi says that “nearly three decades ago, Dr. Zein Obagi redefined skincare to include the concept of creating and maintaining healthy skin instead of only treating skin disease”. This new philosophy led to the development of some of the most widely recognized skincare products and solutions recommended by physicians.

The next generation from Dr Zein Obagi is ZO Skin Health; it provides results-oriented therapies tailored to meet your specific needs. Delivering clinically proven results, these solutions maintain healthy skin that is strong, smooth and firm, evenly toned, and fully hydrated.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi states that the Anti-Aging Skincare Program uses higher concentrations of active ingredients including growth factors, retinol, and specialized enzymes, to prevent and help repair moderate skin damage at the cellular level. An example of the Obagi Zo skin care protocol for Anti-Aging is as follows:

Directions for Use:

Step 1. Cleanse

Offects Exfoliating Cleanser

Moisten hands with lukewarm water; apply a small amount to damp face and neck. To help increase penetration of the active ingredients, rub one minute. Rinse thoroughly. Use twice a day, AM and PM.

Step 2. Activate

Offects Exfoliating Polish

After cleansing, moisten skin with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount to damp face and neck. Gently massage skin in a circular motion, adding water as necessary. Rinse thoroughly. Use at least twice a week.

Step 3. Stimulate

Ossential Daily Power Defence

Following cleansing, apply 2 – 3 pumps on face and neck every morning. Massaging skin increases absorption, penetration and stimulation. Follow with Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30.

Step 4. Stimulate

Ossential Growth Factor Serum

Following cleansing, depress 1 – 2 pumps, and apply over face and neck every evening. Massaging skin increases absorption, penetration and stimulation.

Step 5. Protect

Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30

To prevent sun damage and reduce photo-aging, apply 2 – 3 pumps evenly to the face and neck 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 – 3 hours when in direct sunlight. Doubles as a primer for even make-up application and longer wear.

Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi  agrees that Obagi Zo products are the future of skin care. They have all of the components – the science, the products, the manuals, the protocols, and the physicians.

The combination of Dr Obagi’s principles from 25 years ago and his newly developed principles of today enable physicians to treat, maintain, prevent, and provide ideal and exceptional skin care to people all over the world. He likes to call this the “Universal Approach to Skin Health.”
