Dimple Creation Surgery

A Dimple is a small natural indentation in the flesh on a part of the human body, most notably in the cheek or on the chin. Dimples may appear and disappear over an extended period of time. They are caused by underlying muscles, that form on some people’s cheeks, especially when they smile.

Dimples are often regarded as an object of beauty, which can enhance a smile and general facial appearance but many people are not born with them.

A natural dimple is usually formed when there is a small defect in the cheek musculature. The skin overlying this small defect is stuck down to the underlying connective tissue and creates a dimple in the skin with facial animation (smiling).

In some cultures dimples are considered a sign of good luck and prosperity and in others may play a role in sexual selection. Some cultures, for example Asian and Indo-ethnic sub-groups, prefer dimples as a sign of attractiveness and veracity.

It is the case that dimples often attract attention for the right reason and many people perceive them as attractive. Throughout history dimples have been a sign of success, youth and exuberance, with Asian folklore stating that dimples are symbolic of good fortune and fertility.

Dimples may be genetically inherited and have been called a simple dominant trait, but there is no scientific evidence for this or may be caused by variations in the structure of the facial muscle known as zygomaticus major.

Also, dimples help brighten a smile and add character. Many patients state that one of their siblings or close friends have a dimple and they are happy to know that dimple surgery is available to give them that option as well.

For those people that wish to have permanent dimples as part of their appearance, Dimple creation surgery is an option. For the rest of us owing to developments in science and surgery, it is now possible to surgically create permanent dimples, and the surgical procedure to create dimples is very simple and straightforward when done properly.

Dimple creation surgery is one of the latest trends in cosmetic surgery and Plastic surgeons have reported a huge rise in demand for dimples, probably due to celebrity culture. Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi one of the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeons, specializes in dimple creation surgery.

Dimple creation surgery, or Dimpleplasty, can be performed quite simply and safely when performed by a trained specialist surgeon in this type of surgery. Dr Ayham Al- Ayoubi is an expert in this procedure and has had very successful results with many patients.

The surgical procedure used to create dimples is, in itself, a fairly simple one, straightforward when done properly and is commonly done as a minor surgical procedure in operating day case theatre.

The procedure involves simulating the natural way a dimple is formed, by forming a connection between the skin and the cheek muscle, such that when the muscle contracts, it pulls the skin inwards to form a dimple.

A punch biopsy instrument is placed against the buccal mucosa (inner cheek) and circular motions are made to cut through the mucosa, sub mucosal fat, and cheek muscle. A circular core composed of these tissues is removed, leaving the skin intact, which will create a shallow cylindrical-shaped defect under the skin.

The inside of the cheek is then closed with one or two absorbable stitches, which dissolve over the next few days.

After the sutures dissolve and absorbs , in approximately  two weeks  the skin flattens out creating a normal appearance as earlier. When the internal scar heals it connects the cheek muscle to the skin thus creating a dimple when smiling.

This period could vary from a few days to several weeks depending on the healing and the extent of tissue removed.

Dimple creation surgery can be performed both on cheeks that are chubby or not.

The size of the dimple determines the amount of tissue to be removed. Dimple creation surgery can be done on any type or size cheek.

Post-surgical care as always has to be maintained. The oral cavity is a source of bacteria and hence great care has to be maintained. An anti-septic mouth wash has to be used a couple of times a day to keep the site as germ free as possible. Suitable antibiotics will also be prescribed to help with faster healing.

Recovery time following dimple creation is short and patients can return home shortly after the procedure. Side-effects are mild and patients can resume normal activities almost immediately.

After the procedure, full after care will be given from the London Medical and Aesthetic clinic. Our experienced team will ensure that all our patients are happy before and after procedure and get the results they desire.
