Breast Reduction

The way a woman feels about her breasts is very personal. Over-developed breasts may make some women appear out of shape and over-weight or limit their participation in certain activities and exercises. This often results in embarrassment or self consciousness.

Breast Reduction surgery has been performed for over twenty years, but the procedure was not a common plastic surgery request until about six to eight years ago. It is now so popular that it puts it in the top five most frequently requested procedures.

Where previously women with overlarge breasts simply had to accept their discomfort as their genetic heritage, just as small breasted women accepted theirs, the new acceptance of a woman’s right to control her own body contours has changed over the past twenty to thirty years

Female breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is an operation to reduce the weight and volume of the breasts

It can be difficult to have to deal with constant attention focused on the chest area and never being comfortable in a bra, tight top or even a social situation.

Breast reduction can help women over the age of 18 who suffer from unusually large breasts.  The problem of large breasts, may cause problems at all ages and these are chiefly backache, neck pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, rashes under the breasts and the feeling of self consciousness.

Because of the sexual nature of breasts the undue prominence may attract unwanted attention from the opposite sex, comments and sexual innuendoes. These can cause psychological distress to many women.

Medically, oversized breasts or breasts that differ in size or shape from one another can cause a woman backache or skin rashes beneath the breasts.

Breast reduction (Mammoplasty) surgery is more than a cosmetic procedure; it can make a woman feel comfortable, both medically and emotionally by improving the appearance of the breasts.

This type of surgery has been practiced for more than 40 years. Better results are now being achieved through new surgical techniques.

A reduction can also relieve the physical symptoms related to large, heavy, pendulous breasts and to relieve back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation and problems with clothing which are common in women with large, pendulous breasts, as well as for improvement in appearance.

They may also make sports more enjoyable The long term results of the operation cannot be predicted in a specific patient, due to many factors unrelated to surgery, such as normal slackening of tissues, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, breast feeding and weight changes.

This operation permits the patient to feel better about her figure, to more easily acquire properly fitting clothing and to be more comfortable while engaging in physical activity.

In Breast reduction surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin, fat and breast tissue giving them a smaller and firmer appearance. In exchange for this improvement the patient must accept scarring on the lower part of the breasts.

The surgeon will aim to leave as little scar tissue on the skin as possible, however, any scar tissue that is created from the breast lift procedure is permanent. You should have a discussion in regards to scar placement with Dr Ayham Al- Ayoubi prior to the operation so that your results meet your expectations.

The dangers of breast cancer are no greater after this type of breast surgery, and self examination of your breast post-operatively is still possible and important. Temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation are reported by about 15% of women after having breast reduction surgery.

Women are not the only ones who suffer from this condition. In men enlargement of the male breast tissue, also known as gynecomastia, can be an equivalent source of discomfort and embarrassment. For men the breast reduction procedure is often performed using liposuction or Smartlipo laser with suction.

The growing acceptance of cosmetic and corrective plastic surgery to obtain a balanced and more proportional shape and the increased amount of information available to the general public on this field of medicine has greatly increased the popularity of breast reduction surgery.

For those individuals who do not wish to have major surgery to reduce their breast size, then Smartlipo laser Lipo is a further option.  Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi at the London Medical and Aesthetic clinic has developed a revolutionary unique laser breast reduction technique, which does not involve major incision, instead using a combination of advanced laser technology and micro-suction to reduce the size of the breast and tighten the skin at the same time.
