The Cellulaze laser is the very first andonly laser technology to treat cellulite effectively and permanently, through a minimally invasive laser surgical procedure.
Cellulaze laser technology, offering a light-based solution for the treatment of cellulite. The system has a solid state Nd: YAG emitting light in the 1440-nm wavelength.
Mr Ayham Al-Ayoubi explains: effective cellulite treatment means addressing the three structural causes of cellulite:
- Fibrous septae
- Bulging pockets of fat
- Natural thinning of the skin that occurs with aging
Cellulite is enlarged pockets of fat that are pushed towards the skin’s surface by tight, inflexible connective tissue. It’s a problem that plagues even thin women. A healthy diet, along with regular exercise, can minimize the appearance of cellulite, but diet and exercise alone will never completely eliminate it.
An estimated 85 percent of women over the age of 20 are affected by cellulite, a degenerative and largely untreated condition in which dimply herniations and depressions develop within the layers of the skin.
The cause of bad cellulite isn’t skin deep, it runs much deeper than that. Uneven, dimpled skin begins to affect most women after puberty and the problem usually becomes worse with age and with the after effects of childbirth.
Cellulite is caused by several physiological changes including:
An increase in the number or size of fat cells pushing up through the tissue beneath the skin.
Thin connective tissue under the skin that becomes stretched or distended as a result of aging or weight gain. Undulations caused by hardening of tissue underneath the skin.
Cellulaze laser treatment employs the 1440-nm wavelength along with the proprietary Sidelight 3D fiber, which directs laser energy precisely where needed to achieve long-lasting, effective results.
With the laser energy directed upward, the skin is slightly heated coagulating the collagen and stimulating a growth of new collagen. Turn the handpiece ninety degrees, and the laser thermally subcises the septal bands that pull down the skin creating the dimpling effect. Rotate the handpiece another ninety degrees and the laser energy disrupts the bulging pockets of fat.
The Cellulaze system also supports two intelligent delivery system technologies: SmartSense and ThermaGuide.
SmartSense
The motion-sensing Cellulaze handpiece is equipped with an advanced microchip, or accelerometer, that is inserted into the handpiece.
Based on the setting and the motion of the handpiece, precise laser power is metered and delivered.

ThermaGuide
The ThermaGuide temperature sensing cannula has a thermistor near the treatment tip of the fiber that profiles temperature subdermally near the treatment site. This information is relayed back to the laser.
The laser, in turn, has two user selectable temperature settings: a treatment (Rx) limit and a high (Hi) temperature limit. During the laser procedure, if the laser detects that the subdermal temperature reaches the Rx limit, the laser will stop emitting energy until the cannula is moved to another treatment area (cooler than the Rx limit).
If the high (Hi) temperature limit is reached during treatment, the laser stops and instructs the user to take measures to immediately cool the treatment area. Once the laser error has been cleared, lasing can resume in another treatment area (cooler than the Rx limit).

Cellulaze treatment is the only minimally-invasive procedure available today for improving the appearance of cellulite. The science behind this innovation is a pulsed Nd:YAG 1440-nm wavelength along with the proprietary Sidelight fiber.
The sidelight fiber design allows targeted bi-directional treatment to the three structural issues that cause cellulite underneath the skin. This combination of Sidelight design and the 1440nm wavelength, increase the dermal layer by effectively stimulating the hypodermal junction to produce collagen. The 1440-nm wavelength has a high affinity for water, See Figure 2, increasing collagen growth and remodeling for thicker, more healthy-looking skin.
Who can benefit from Cellulaze laser surgery?
A thorough history of previous treatment methods, current medications, allergies and pigmentary problems should be discussed before treatment. The following clinical protocol is based on methods in current clinical use. It does not substitute for the clinical judgment of individual patient needs.
Patient selection criterion is a patient presenting with cellulite grades 2 and 3.
Patient selection exclusion criterion includes, but is not confined to patients with:
Unrealistic expectations of procedure results
- A history of postsurgical noncompliance

An optional audible tone can be set for both alarms to further aid in profiling subdermal temperature while treating.

Cellulaze has long eluded an effective medical solution, topical cellulite treatments such as creams and lotions, massage, ultrasound and even surgical subcision have all yielded inconsistent, unsatisfactory results. The difficulty in treating cellulite is due to the many factors which produce the dimpled look characteristic of cellulite.
Structural issues within or underneath the dermal layer, including lack of collagen and thinning of the skin, bulging subcutaneous fat and stiffened fibrous connective tissues combine to create the dimpled appearance associated with cellulite.
An effective cellulite treatment must address all three major causes of cellulite below the skin: Stiffened fibrous septae, bulging fat and thinning skin.
Cellulaze is a minimally invasive laser treatment specifically designed to attack all three causes of cellulite in just one treatment. Indicated and cleared for a long lasting improvement in the appearance of cellulite, Cellulaze treats the fibrous septae, reduces fat and increases skin thickness and elasticity to flatten and smooth the skin’s surface.
After local anaesthesia is administered to the treatment area, the Cellulaze laser fibre, threaded through a cannula, is then inserted through a small incision.
Cellulaze combines the use of a pulsed ND yag laser and cynosure’s sidelight, side firing laser. As the laser energy is applied to the tissue, micro bubbles begin to form at the tip of the laser, these bubbles serve to disrupt and heat the pockets of fat, at the same time the energy delivered is highly absorbed by the adipose tissue, which efficiently breaks up the tissue and disrupts the fat.
The sidelight technology allows you to directly target the tissue from different angles to treat the underlying causes of cellulite. Next the Cellulaze laser energy is used to thermally subside the septal bands which pull down on the skin and create the dimpling effect.
Releasing these bands creates smoother looking skin. In the last step the laser energy is directed upwards and the skin is gently heated. This coagulates the collagen and allows the growth of new collagen, ultimately increasing skin thickness and elasticity.

Cellulaze is also equipped with cynosure’s intelligent delivery technology; thermaguide and smartsense. Cynosure’s thermaguide ensures optimal results throughout the procedure. A temperature probe at the tip of the cannula constantly monitors the subdermal temperature and automatically remains a safe target temperature.
Smartsense accelerator technology automatically turns the laser off when the handpiece is stationary, preventing the likelihood of overheating or hotspots. Both thermaguide and smartsense technologies are important for providing a uniform treatment and yielding the best possible results.

The Cellulaze laser treatments have demonstrated a benefit from the use of subcutaneous laser energy in terms of tissue tightening through tissue coagulation as well as the regeneration of collagen and connective tissue.
Patients in clinical studies have demonstrated an average increase in skin thickness of 23% and 27% at one month and one year, respectively, while skin elasticity increased an average of 32% at one month and 21% at one year. Like any procedure there is a period of healing when new collagen is formed. Ultrasound measurements have demonstrated a 22% increase in skin thickness and a 32% increase in skin elasticity.
How safe is Cellulaze laser?
As with Smartlipo MPX and Smartlipo Triplex laser workstations, Cellulaze laser incorporates the proprietary SmartSense and ThermaGuide intelligent laser energy delivery systems.
Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi explains: “Unlike the non-invasive treatment approaches that aim to temporarily treat the appearance of cellulite, Cellulaze laser uses a three-dimensional approach to directly target the subdermal structure that forms the foundation of cellulite.”
Cellulaze laser has received FDA approval in the USA (Food and Drug Administration) and CE Mark certification in Europe. Researches demonstrates long-term improvements in skin elasticity and skin thickness.
