FAQ – Aquamid

Read more about Aquamid

Aquamid is a soft volume filler which integrates naturally with the body’s own tissue. It is a biocompatible, non-allergenic and non-absorbable hydrogel consisting of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide.

Polyacrylamide is a name for a large group of substances having the same basic synthesis materials but being different in characteristics. Polyacrylamides can vary substantially in their properties and hence, are not identical. Aquamid is manufactured in Denmark based on patented cross-linking technology. Contura has worked extensively on developing the molecular structure to manufacture the gel tailored especially for soft tissue augmentation. Aquamid contains the highest water content – 97.5% – and less dry matter – 2.5% – than any other polyacrylamide hydrogel.

This means that Aquamid:

  • Is highly biocompatible
  • Allows maximum water exchange with tissue promoting full integration in the body
  • Can be injected with a very thin needle (27G) which minimizes pain and discomfort

The Aquamid hydrogel is homogeneous and does not contain microparticles. Therefore, Aquamid does not cause tissue hardening or granulomas.

Aquamid allows the exchange of fluids with surrounding cells resembling normal tissue behaviour. It maintains its shape and does not migrate from the injection site. The hydrogel becomes totally integrated with the tissue. It follows the movements of the tissue and hence cannot be distinguished from tissue by touch and feel.

Aquamid is designed to smooth out and soften deep lines and wrinkles, restore facial volume, create higher cheekbones, treat facial scars, enhance your smile lines, enhance your lips or augment your nose bridge.

A large percentage of Aquamid is water and the body will accept the gel, as it will only form a thin membrane around the implant which forms to keep it in place. Once injected in the tissue, it continuously exchanges water between the hydrogel and the surrounding tissue. With time the gel becomes vascularised enabling access to the immune system.

The volume injected is equivalent to the final result and enables to correct your looks with precision, as the gel is very elastic, it moves with all facial expressions.

The effect of the injection of Aquamid is permanent. As the initial swelling subsides there will be some loss of volume, for this reason 2-3 treatments may be necessary to obtain an optimum result.

Aquamid is suitable for both men and women of different ages. It can help with deep folds around the mouth and nose, sunken cheeks, facial scars, chin augmentation, nose enchancement and deep wrinkles. Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi will be able to assess your suitability for the treatment in the consultation.

The following information details how different age groups may benefit from using Aquamid:

In the 20s: Collagen production slows down and then becomes dormant. This is an ideal time to start Aquamid.

In the 30s and 40s: Aquamid is ideal for long lasting lines and wrinkle correction and enchancing cheek volume.

In the 50s and onwards; Aquamid is ideal to restore facial contours and volume and correct facial laxity and improve the jaw line and other areas. Patients can achieve full face lifting without the need for aggressive surgery with the results lasting up to five years.

Aquamid is considered a very safe treatment and there is no chance at all that patients will be allergic to it, as it contains no proteins.

As with all filler injections, there is a small risk of mild irritation, redness, tenderness or transient swelling at the injection site. Typically, such reactions resolve within a couple of days.

In rare cases an infection can occur. The symptoms could be a tingling sensation in the treated area. If an infection is suspected, the injecting doctor should be contacted. The recommended treatment is with broad-spectra antibiotics (steroids or NSAIDs should never be used, as they may seriously aggravate the condition by suppressing the body’s own defense mechanisms).

Aquamid has a proven track record for safety and lasting satisfaction, based on ten years of experience and more than 400,000 treatments administered.

Please note that you should avoid laser, peeling, skin resurfacing, pigmentation or aesthetic treatments in the area injected for at least six months before and after Aquamid injections.

Aquamid Vs Other Dermal Fillers

Aquamid is a soft volume filler, which integrates with your patient’s body tissue. It is a biocompatible, non-allergenic and non-absorbable hydrogel.

Unlike other fillers, the full effect of the filler is obtained immediately. Results are predictable and natural looking. The volume obtained with the Aquamid product range is equal to the amount injected and the results last for up to three to five years after the first treatment session.

With hyaluronic acid and collagen fillers, wrinkle correction usually lasts for three up to tewlve months. Since Aquamid does not get absorbed in the body, the results last for many years, without need for re-treatments, however, each patient is different. It may be necessary for touch-up treatments, to reach the desired effect.
